Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD
Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD
“Over the past 35 years there has been a precipitous proliferation of research on prolonged exposure for PTSD. This book provides an extensive review of adaptations and enhancements to improve access, engagement, and outcomes with prolonged exposure. Obtaining the best outcomes with prolonged exposure requires not only trained and skilled clinicians―it requires clinicians who have the ability to adapt, enhance, and tailor it for individual patients and settings. This book is a guide on how to do that. This should be a required textbook for all students and trainees in the area of psychological trauma.” (Alan L. Peterson, PhD, ABPP, is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Chief of the Division of Behavioral Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio)
“Prolonged Exposure for PTSD: Innovations to Improve Access, Engagement, and Outcomes represents an important analysis of the fundamental issues associated with access to a critically important psychological treatment for PTSD. The scientific literature supports the use of Prolonged Exposure as a front line treatment for trauma and its related disorders and this volume provides key information for clinicians, researchers, and mental health students who aim to apply PE to the widest array of trauma-exposed populations world-wide. The first book of this type, the authors have provided valuable new information and summarized succinctly the academic literature that is the underpinning of the success of this approach to psychological care. It is both a comprehensive and essential book for all those interested in treating and studying trauma survivors.” (Terry Keane, PhD, is Associate Chief of Staff for Research at VA Boston Healthcare System, the Director of the Behavioral Science Division of the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and a Professor of Psychiatry & Assistant Dean for Research, at the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine at Boston University)
“This book is an enthusiastic endorsement of prolonged exposure therapy, an evidence-based treatment for PTSD, recommended in every guideline worldwide. Written by leaders in the field, it is comprehensive, covering everything from the latest research to recent advances. It is timely, including telemental health, intensive delivery formats, digital interventions, and virtual reality. Clinicians and researchers will find it invaluable.” (Barbara Olasov Rothbaum, PhD, ABPP is Director of the Emory Healthcare Veterans Program and the Trauma and Anxiety Recovery Program, and holds the Paul A. Janssen Chair in Neuropsychopharmacology in the Department of Psychiatry at the Emory University School of Medicine)
From the Back Cover
This book aims to reconcile a disconnect in the field of trauma psychology: On one hand, decades of accumulated evidence support the safety and efficacy of prolonged exposure therapy (PE) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). On the other hand, many individuals suffering from PTSD cannot access PE. Even among individuals who begin PE, many experience challenges in completing a full course of treatment. Further, PTSD is a complex and heterogenous disorder; not all individuals who complete PE experience a meaningful benefit. PE is an evidence-based psychological treatment that helps individuals approach situations and memories related to their trauma so that they learn to think differently about the trauma and no longer experience intense distress when confronted with trauma reminders. This book is designed for clinicians and researchers who share the goal of increasing the reach and impact of evidence-based treatment for individuals with PTSD. Each chapter synthesizes the latest research findings and provides clear clinical guidance to inform adaptations to improve access, engagement, and clinical outcomes for PE.
