Kundu’s Bedside Clinics in Medicine – Part I and II, Arup Kumar Kundu 9th Edition Latest Edition
by Arup Kumar Kundu
I have great pleasure in presenting the Ninth Edition of ‘Bedside Clinics in Medicine, Part I’. The first Edition was
published in the year 1996, and thereafter it was revised and edited from time to time in order to make the same
up-to-date. In view of the wide acceptance of the previous editions by the medical fraternity, by the God’s grace, I
have ultimately succeeded to bring out the present edition of the book in a new layout. The overwhelming success
of previous editions boosted me to bring out the new edition. Virtually all the chapters have been rewritten,
appreciably revised and updated, maintaining the previous style and tradition intact. The book reviews a wide range
of common clinical cases in general medicine with elaborate discussion on core topics. Many new photographs have
been included for easy and better understanding of the concepts of clinical medicine. I have wholeheartedly tried
to present here all clinical topics required for a modern, clinical curriculum. This ‘magic book in clinical medicine’
is now ready for the medical students of our country and abroad.
It is my strong belief that bedside medicine (patient-oriented medicine) still holds effective in the present era
of high-tech medicine, and this is why, I have attempted to write this monograph dealing with common clinical
problems along with some fundamental information which a medical student should know at the end of his/her
clinical training. In this rapidly changing global scenario, even with availability of sophisticated gadgets, modern
technology and advanced investigations, clinical examination is the quicker and more cost-effective way in arriving
at a logical diagnosis. I strongly believe that clinical medicine will never die even in the era of modern technology.
The ‘storytelling style’ of the book narrates step-by-step details of history, analysis of symptoms, clinical methods,
clinical pearls, history of medicine, relevance of clinical findings, differential diagnosis, details of investigations
and logical management in a lucid language. The present edition deals with different must-know areas in clinical
medicine in a student-friendly way. This book will teach both the science and arts of clinical medicine from the
fundamentals to the most advanced level.
During my long tenure as a teacher for more than three decades, I feel that the skills needed for a comprehensive
and competent clinical examination can only be mastered at the bedside by repeated clinical practice. The book
emphasizes the basic approach to clinical medicine, and its problem-solving attitude helps the students prepare for
the medicine practical (even in theoretical) at final MBBS, MD, DNB and MRCP level, and also in their professional
life in future. This quick-reference ready-reckoner is full of valuable tips from beginning to the end. As clinical
methods are scattered throughout the book, the students are advised to follow the ‘Contents’ and ‘Index’ for easy
reading. It is advisable to set a ‘mind map’ of the chapters, as the students progress from first to last page. In many
places, ‘history of medicine’ has been focused for the relevant topic under discussion. Now try to enjoy the world
of clinical medicine.
This present edition contains 100 model long, short and spot cases, 416 photographs (elaborating clinical
methods in details along with real-life pictures of patients), 51 tables, many drawings, flowcharts and innumerable
questions with their logical answers. I have tried my best to avoid any ambiguity in the text. The book remains an
invaluable resource for MBBS students, house officers, postgraduates studying MD, DNB, MRCP curricula, and junior
teachers preparing for clinical teaching sessions. I feel really happy as the book is nicely accepted by academicians,
students, teachers and leading physicians from different corners of the country and abroad. Healthy suggestions
and constructive criticisms from the readers will always be appreciated by the author and received with gratitude.
I have immense pleasure in placing on record my appreciation for Mr Satish Kumar Jain (Chairman and Managing
Director) and Mr Varun Jain (Director) of CBS Publishers and Distributors (CBSPD), New Delhi for publishing and
distributing the book in India and abroad with great care. Mr SK Verma of CBSPD (VP, Marketing & Distributions)
needs special mention who has guided me in every step of this long journey. Mr YN Arjuna (Senior Vice-President,
Publishing, Editorial and Publicity) helped me by his constant input and encouragement, which have had a significant
impact on the final texture of the text. I am also thankful to my wife Bijoya, son Dr Abhishek and daughter Ushasi,
who have assisted me by their constant encouragement and support, and I remain indebted for their tolerance,
patience and understanding during the preparation of the book.
I have great pleasure in presenting the Ninth Edition of ‘Bedside Clinics in Medicine, Part II’. The first Edition was published in the year 1999, and thereafter it was revised and edited from time to time in order to bring the same as current and up-to-date. In view of the wide acceptance of the previous editions by the medical fraternity, by the God’s grace, I have ultimately succeeded to bring out the present edition of the book in a new lay-out. The overwhelming success of previous editions motivated me to bring out the new edition. Virtually all the chapters have been rewritten, appreciably revised and updated, maintaining the previous style and tradition intact. This Part II book, along with Bedside Clinics in Medicine, Part I, is now known by medical students all over as ‘Magic Books in Clinical Medicine’.
It is a mammoth task for the students to read and remember all the current complicated medical facts and data to keep pace with the present era of information. As radiology, ECG, instrumental procedures, specimens, data analysis, different drugs and emergency medicine (i.e. Table-works’) are integral parts of investigation, diagnosis and treatment, I felt committed to my students to rebuild the book with different modern clinical practices.
For more than three decades, working as a teacher and examiner in medicine, it is my belief that today’s students lack clinical orientation and this is why I have attempted to write this book dealing with common clinical problems/investigations along with some fundamental information and a huge collection of invaluable facts. This new edition sketches step-by-step details of all data, approach, values, analysis, reasons behind, investigations and logical management in a question-answer format with a lucid language. The present edition deals with different must-know areas in clinical medicine which a student is expected to know at the end of his/her clinical training in medical school. I clearly emphasize that the book is a companion to the textbook and a reference manual not only to the undergraduates but postgraduates, residents, junior teachers, practicing physicians will also be highly benefitted if they read the book thoroughly. It is my strong belief that the book is a key companion to the students appearing for medicine practical examination.
This type of book with rich clinical material, which is rarely available in the market, has now become the need of the hour. All the chapters of the book are dealt with commonly encountered questions in viva-voce and practical examination in general medicine with their logical answers. The book is clear, concise and comprehensive in all respect, and contains many tables, figures, diagrams, X-rays, ECGs and charts for data analysis. The problem- solving attitude of the monograph will definitely help students in viva-voce, practical, as well as in their theoretical examination, and also in their professional life in future. This ready-reckoner handbook with a learning-revision tool is full of valuable tips from beginning to the end, and that is why students are advised to read the manual between the lines.
I feel happy and jubilant as the book is nicely accepted by academicians, students, eminent teachers and leading physicians from different corners of the country and abroad. Like the previous editions, healthy suggestions, feedbacks and constructive criticisms will always be appreciated by the author with gratitude.
